Thank you kindly *checks* Ma’am(?)
Well, the premise that someone might treat Male/Male relationships with a fetishistic attitude has two prerequisites.
1. That person is attracted to males.
2. That person is not male.
If you don’t qualify for both then you don’t qualify.
And while I can neither prove it, nor have any interest in doing so, I would suspect that without the fetish angle Male/Male relationships in writing would be treated with significantly more respect. At least being dragged out of this horrible gutter they’re languishing in at the moment.

I think the case has been made for Buffy being an indecent and immortal little girl.
It’s a good thing I’m not interested in statutory rape otherwise I’d be in an awful lot of trouble.
You are the boss Ashley, it’s you.
I’ve gone over this a few times before, but I suppose I can do it again. I’ll only be listing the Kids and Trolls however since I don’t really ship the other characters.
John/(Any Girl except Terezi)
Dave/(Any Girl except Rose/Vriska)
Karkat/(Any Girl except Rose/Vriska)
(Any Girl)/(Any Other Girl)
I don’t ship John with Terezi ever since she put the stabs on Vriska. It just seems… kind of sickening.
And I don’t ship Rose or Vriska with Dave/Karkat for similar reasons.
For Vriska there is simply so much narrative impetus and development for her relationship with John that I honestly can’t even conceive of any realistic circumstances that would break her away from him. At least none that wouldn’t bring with it a narrative necessity for them to reconcile.
As for Rose, I simply don’t see any chemistry between her and Dave or Karkat, or at least none that I would be interested in.
Vriska’s reason also works for Rose and vica versa, but to a lesser extent.
However Lesbians are always in season.
I do try to make my advice and criticisms as general as possible. It just so happens that Slash fiction tends to be the most egregious offenders for reasons that should be self-evident. (It’s written with the sole intention of making people’s naughty parts happy.)
But yes, aside from the few times that I have specifically evaluated John, Karkat or the possibility of the two of them together I’ve been trying to speak as broadly as possible, either about writing in general, pairings/romance in general or slash in general.
I’ve always hated the “A for effort”, effort should influence the tone of a person’s criticism, not the content. The content of critique should be devoted to merit. It’s really just part of a greater and infinitely annoying trend of celebrating what does not deserve celebration and a sense of entitlement toward self-esteem and success.
