I was thinking about UU and uu’s game of chess, and while I know absolutely nothing about chess (this is basically me playing chess) I noticed some shit about it and I’m gonna ramble about stuff that’s probably going to be proven wrong eventually.
Obviously, uu’s victory is a reference to Complacency of the Learned, where Calmasis defeats Zazzerpan in chess by using an enchantment to keep playing after being checkmated. And Zazzerpan and UU were both previously undefeated before their game with Calmasis and uu. One thing I think is interesting about this is that, despite his role as an antagonist in CotL, Calmasis is described as an antihero instead of an outright villain. This seems to imply that even though he is the antagonist, his goal of rebelling against the Complacency is ultimately a heroic one.
And uu’s strategy, switching the king and queen, seems very similar to how the White Queen was seen holding the King’s scepter. UU, on the other hand, tried to make her pieces more troll-like, with horns and a blood caste system, similar to how the Condesce tried to make humanity more troll-like.
Since uu’s side apparently represents Prospit, the “Good” kingdom, and Calmasis, the seemingly sinister but apparently heroic character in CotL, while UU’s side represents Derse and the Complacency, perhaps it will eventually turn out that uu is actually the good one, despite being a rude, murderous creep.
I really have a hard time believing that uu could possibly be anything less than a raging assbag of Gamzee-like proportions. I mean sure maybe he opposes the Condesce and/or Lord English, but that really wouldn’t be surprising, nor would it really be redeeming.
