Okay, this one really gets to me, especially when it comes to the trolls.
I’ve brought this up before with people, and they’ve been all “oh, genderbent!X Y and Z aren’t actually canon characters, so they don’t have canon personalities or anything, so I have free reign”

Except, well, you don’t really. You’re basing it on a canon character that DOES have a canon personality. You’re just adding or removing a dick, really. If you want to make a character with a completely different personality, they might as well be a different character with similar interests.

Man, I just have no respect whatsoever for these sort of people, who feel entitled to twist and warp the source material however they want without hearing a nary of criticism for it.

It’s just awful. If you’re the type of person who will throw out chunks of a perfectly good character just for shits and giggles, then you’re the type of person who clearly shouldn’t be allowed near the character to begin with.

Trolls symbols are used to identify themselves and their Ancestors. Your fantroll is not Aradia, or Karkat, or any other character, and they can’t be related to them either, so stop using their symbols on your fantrolls!

That’s not entirely accurate. Here, I’ll quote from canon.

AG: A sign is an insignia we must wear, specific to our class. Each class has a huge alpha8et of signs, so when someone shares yours, you know you have a lot in common. I was so excited to see it.

It’s not really specific to related trolls, just trolls that are similar.

High School/Normal AUs are actually significantly less obnoxious for Homestuck than for most fandoms, because part of the draw of Homestuck is the characters themselves and their interactions and relationships. Transplanting them to a more normal/age appropriate setting to focus exclusively upon the characters and their various relationships and dynamics is by itself not a bad idea.

Although that being said, just because it’s not an inherently bad idea doesn’t magically mean that all of the idiots who fuck it all up in other fandoms won’t do it here as well.

I’m going to be blunt: I find it triggering to anyone who’s been abused and disturbing as hell. She abuses him both physically and emotionally, and I can’t get over that. What it is is an abusive relationship, and in the end, he couldn’t leave.

The fact that she shows remorse doesn’t do shit for it. She still did it, and Tavros is dragged along and ended up dead because of her. If someone in real life had been abused physically and emotionally by someone and finally realised and left, the abuser feeling remorse would be looked down on. While the victim may forgive them, it would still be looked down on. 

It’s taken as a serious issue in real life and the fact that people romanticise it seriously makes me feel ill. Especially since people always use the excuse of “Oh she didn’t want to”/”He’s not mad about it”

I get that homestuck is a comedy and I get that Vriska is a complex character, and while I don’t dislike her on her own, when she’s with Tavros I despise it.

Vriska/Tavros really, really peeves the shit out of me. I don’t like this pairing on any level and everything about it pisses me off.

Plus Tavros is a worthless sack of shit and I wouldn’t wish him on anyone, much less someone like Vriska who would essentially just end up with an idiot shackled to their leg.

Actually this is actually something that is entirely reasonable to do. Humans and trolls are extremely similar on a physiological level, as well as a psychological level. They’re clearly different but not nearly so different that comparisons are completely uncalled for. Particularly given the relationship between the two species, as humans were very indirectly sired by the troll species by the creation of the human universe.

Caliborn literally looks like a younger version of Lord English. He’s missing a leg and tooth in the same place as Lord English. He’s visibly of the same species. He types in ALL CAPS like Caliborn and Caliborn said he would type in GREEN after Calliope’s death, like Lord English does. Caliborn uses a Staff/Gun combination item LIKE Lord English. And the flash Caliborn: Enter features both Caliborn AND LORD ENGLISH entering places and wrecking shit up.

It seems whenever I run into Johns as Dave, Karkat, any male character, they always push ‘i am not a homosexual.’ and it just ruins John’s character.

The only possible method to overuse the phrase “i am not a homosexual” is if someone is uh, trying desperately hard to come on to you in a very homosexual fashion.

You’re really not leaving any canon-loyal John roleplayer anything else to fucking do here if you’re that dedicated to getting all inside his anus and living out all of your wildest boyfucking fantasies.

Actually, I’ve seen a few John roleplayers who use that phrase at the slightest hint of a male character being interested in him, like it’s his catchphrase or something. And they usually do it in a way that makes John seem really insecure about his sexuality, where he freaks out even if Dave jokes about being in love with him, while in canon he’s not freaked out by Karkat’s advances, and even joked about being attracted to Dave before. I can understand why some roleplayers would get sick of Johns constantly insisting they aren’t a homosexual, when they aren’t even trying to get him involved in a slash pairing.

At the very least, they can stop quoting that specific line and say something new, like “sorry, i’m not into guys,” or something.

This actually sort-of occurred to me a bit afterward. Partially because some other people talked to me about it via Skype.

I suppose it is sort-of a reasonable peeve. Although John Roleplayers really shouldn’t be so quick on the damn draw. It’s supposed to be the thing you pull out when shit’s getting uncomfortable, not at the slightest excuse.
